about

I wrote this song the week I found out about my father’s prostate cancer diagnosis. Any of us could die, any moment of any day. Most American’s avoid thinking about death or facing the realities of it. We live as if the future will never come. As a species, we have a very difficult time holding the fate of others or even our future selves in our minds as we make our present day decisions. Really knowing and holding in mind that everything is temporary--that we could die at any moment--can change how we live our lives.

My father’s parents died before I was born, and I’ve always felt some of that grief in his love. He’s lived much of his life knowing that the people he loves could be gone in a moment. He lets go of grudges. He tries to be friendly to the people he interacts with. He doesn’t ask for a lot. He has been steadfast and kind. He has had a quiet life. This song celebrates the qualities I admire in those that wake up every day, and do their best in their own small ways.

P.S. The prostate cancer treatments were very successful, and my dad's doing great now.

lyrics

A single leaf on the tip of a maple tree, reaching toward the sky
Leaning out into sunlight and air as if it were born to fly.
We’re all born to fly someday
We’re all born to fly away.

A single leaf on the tip of a maple tree, with purpose understood,
To breathe in the co2 and give it back as oxygen, and nurture the greater good
And we all need to breathe right now.
And we all need to give back somehow.

A single leaf on the tip of a maple tree, a season for its home
To build and to nourish the life of the whole and the ones that are yet to come
We’re all have to hold tomorrow with care
'cause we all want to live somewhere.

A single leaf on the tip of a maple tree, living for the light
For beauty and the heights, and the work that’s at hand and then letting go in its time.
And we all must let go someday.
We were all born to fly away.
