about

This song is very simply for the frogs.

I saw a video of the frog song of the last surviving Rabbs' fringe-limbed treefrog. He called and called, and there was never another frog to hear him. He died in captivity in 2016.

We have lost millions of frogs in the last 30 years. 90% of frogs and salamanders are threatened. Nearly 1/3 of species have disappeared in the last 30 years. This is due to habitat destruction, bacterial infections (likely spread by the widespread practice of using frogs in medical practices), and environmental changes.

We’re facing hundreds of species extinctions, and more that we don’t even know about. If we remember the frog, calling for someone else who will never answer, will it change how we think about and treat our environment and the species that we share it with?

In this song, I think of the cello as the echo of lost species. The banjo and cello worked together to create as realistic of a frog sound as I could manage with just these two instruments. Beth Lorio created a beautiful and heart-rending video, available on Youtube.

lyrics

High summer has passed, and the fall’s coming on.
No one has come to answer my song.
But I’ll sing it every night, and I hope you will hear.
Come
Come
Come
Come to me, my dear.

Everything must change. I know that in my bones.
For I was born of water, and I crawled onto the stones.
But everything is getting so much harder, there’s nowhere to call home.
And all my friends, with silent hearts, have left me all alone.

Sometimes I wish I could stop breathing, but it seeps in through my skin.
And so I sing my song to you, until time will take me home again.
Come
Come
Come
Come
Come
Come to me, my dear.
